Top 10 Places to Visit in Udaipur: The Classics and the Quiet Corners

Ask ten Udaipur locals for the city's best places and you'll get ten different lists, plus a side argument about who makes the best kachori. Most guides stop at the palace and the lake. They're right to start there, but the city you'll remember also lives in quiet cenotaphs, garden fountains and a lake at the edge of town where nobody is selling anything.

So here's our list: the big names you shouldn't skip, mixed with the corners we take our own friends to. Ten places, a tip for each, and no fluff.

The ones you can't skip

1. City Palace

Begun in 1559 by Maharana Udai Singh II and added to by his successors for roughly four centuries, the City Palace is the largest palace complex in Rajasthan. Inside you'll walk through courtyards, mirror-work rooms, coloured glass windows and galleries of royal belongings, then step onto balconies that hang right over Lake Pichola. Give it two to three hours. The Crystal Gallery needs a separate ticket, and timings and fees change, so check at the counter.

Tip: hire a guide or take the audio tour. A wall is just a wall until someone tells you who stood behind it.

2. Lake Pichola and Gangaur Ghat

Pichola is the lake on every postcard, with the Lake Palace and Jag Mandir sitting on their islands. See it twice: once from the water and once from the steps of Gangaur Ghat, where locals feed pigeons, artists sketch and couples pose for pre-wedding shoots. People say "ten minutes" here and stay an hour. Our boating guide covers which jetty to use and when.

3. Bagore ki Haveli

This 18th-century haveli on Gangaur Ghat is a museum by day, all jharokhas, mirror work and old costumes. Around 7 pm the courtyard hosts the Dharohar folk dance show, roughly an hour of ghoomar, puppets and live music. The queue forms early in season, so turn up well before the start.

4. Fateh Sagar Lake and Rani Road

If Pichola is the city's royal face, Fateh Sagar is its living room. Evenings on Rani Road mean cool breeze, corn on the cob, cold coffee from carts and half the city out for a walk. Take a boat to Nehru Garden island, or just sit on the wall and watch the hills go dark. Sukhadia Circle nearby is pure, noisy family fun: a big fountain, snack stalls and kids with balloons.

5. Sajjangarh (Monsoon Palace)

Built in 1884 under Maharana Sajjan Singh, this hilltop palace inside Sajjangarh Wildlife Sanctuary is the city's favourite sunset seat. The palace itself is modest; the view over lakes and hills is the real show. The Sajjangarh Biological Park sits at the base, so families can do animals in the afternoon and the sunset after.

The quieter side most visitors miss

6. Ahar Cenotaphs

On the eastern side of the city, rows of white cenotaphs mark the rulers of Mewar. Domes, carved pillars, and the kind of silence where you notice your own footsteps. Go in the late afternoon when the marble turns honey-coloured. Photographers love the symmetry, and you'll often have it to yourself.

7. Saheliyon ki Bari

The "garden of the maidens" was built in the 18th century under Maharana Sangram Singh II: fountains, lotus pools, marble elephants and shady lawns. It's small, which is the point. Come in the morning, before the tour groups, or during the monsoon when everything drips green.

8. Shilpgram

A rural arts and crafts village a few kilometres west of the city, run by the West Zone Cultural Centre. Traditional huts, potters at the wheel, weavers and artisans who are happy to explain their work. In December the 10-day Shilpgram Utsav turns it into a fair of folk dance, music and stalls. Buy directly from the makers; it's fairer for everyone. Ask them about the process; it's half the fun.

9. Badi Lake and Bahubali Hill

About 12 km out, Badi Lake was built by Maharana Raj Singh to see the region through famine. Today it's where locals go when Pichola feels crowded. Climb Bahubali Hill nearby for a wide view of the water and the Aravallis, carry snacks and water, and stay until the light fades.

10. Gulab Bagh

The old royal rose garden, also called Sajjan Niwas, sits right in the city with big shady trees, a small zoo and a toy train for kids. It's at its best early, when walkers do their rounds and Udaipur is still yawning. The Vintage Car Museum, with the royal car collection, is close by if you have a car-mad person in your group.

Local tip: don't try to cram all ten into a day. Pair places by area: City Palace, Gangaur Ghat and Bagore ki Haveli on foot in the old city; Fateh Sagar, Saheliyon ki Bari and Sajjangarh on another day with a cab or auto.

Got an extra day?

  • Menar, about 45 km away, is a village whose wetlands fill with migratory birds roughly from November to February. Carry binoculars.
  • Neemach Mata temple sits on a hill above Fateh Sagar; the climb is steep but the view pays you back. It's one of the temples we cover in our temples guide.
  • Udai Sagar, east of the city, is a calm, misty-morning kind of lake. It's covered in our guide to Udaipur's lakes.
  • Moti Magri, the hill above Fateh Sagar with the Maharana Pratap memorial, is a short, easy add-on.
