There's a moment on Lake Pichola, usually about twenty minutes before sunset, when the boat engine hums low, the City Palace turns the colour of butter and everyone on board stops talking at once. That's the ride you want. Getting it right is mostly about picking the right lake, the right jetty and the right hour.
This guide skips the history lecture (that's in our lakes of Udaipur guide) and sticks to the practical stuff.
Pichola or Fateh Sagar: which ride is for you?
| Lake Pichola | Fateh Sagar | |
|---|---|---|
| Feel | Royal, scenic, the postcard ride | Breezy, local, more casual |
| You'll see | City Palace, Lake Palace, Jag Mandir, ghats, havelis | Open water, Aravalli hills, Nehru Garden island |
| Boat types | Covered motor launches, shared or private | Motorboats, speedboats, paddle boats |
| Best for | First-timers, couples, photographers | Families, friends, a quick evening outing |
If you only have time for one, choose Pichola. If you've done Pichola and want something lighter, Fateh Sagar is a fun hour.
Lake Pichola: where the boats leave from
City Palace jetty (Rameshwar Ghat)
The main Pichola rides start from the jetty inside the City Palace complex. The route loops past the Lake Palace (Jag Niwas) and around Jag Mandir, and some rides include a short stop on Jag Mandir island. Ask when you book whether your ride includes the stop, because it changes how long you're out.
Lal Ghat area
Boats also operate from around Lal Ghat, close to the old city guesthouses. Handy if you're staying nearby and don't want to go through the palace complex first.
Fateh Sagar: the easy-going lake
Fateh Sagar's boats leave from the jetty on the lakeside road. You'll find regular motorboats, speedboats for anyone who wants a splash, and paddle boats that are mostly an excuse for friends to argue about steering. Many rides go out to Nehru Garden island. Afterwards, walk along Rani Road for chai and corn as the sun drops behind the hills.

Timing your sunset ride
Sunset rides are the most popular slot on Pichola, and for good reason: the palace walls glow, the hills turn purple and the water goes copper. A few things to know:
- Sunset moves with the seasons. In winter it comes early, in summer much later, so the "sunset ride" slot shifts too. Check the current timing at the counter on the day.
- Book ahead in peak season. From October to March, and on long weekends and holidays, sunset boats fill up. Buying your ticket earlier in the day saves you a disappointed evening.
- Morning is the quiet option. The first rides of the day have softer light, cooler air and far fewer people. Good for clear photos of the palace.
- Afternoons in summer are harsh. From April to June the midday sun bounces off the water. Go early or late.
Boat timings and fees are revised from time to time, so treat anything you read online, including here, as a rough guide and check before you go.
What you'll see from the water
- The full length of the City Palace rising straight out of the lake, which you can't appreciate from inside it.
- Jag Mandir's pavilions and the Lake Palace floating on Jag Niwas island.
- Gangaur Ghat, Ambrai Ghat and Hanuman Ghat, with people bathing, praying, chatting.
- Temple bells drifting across from the old city, and on clear days Sajjangarh on its hill in the distance.
Tips locals swear by
- Carry a light jacket from November to February. It gets surprisingly nippy on the water after sunset.
- Walk or take an auto to the City Palace side. The lanes around it jam with cars in the evening.
- Sit on the palace side of the boat for the best views on the outbound stretch. Polite seat-swapping on the way back is allowed.
- In the monsoon (July to September), the lakes are full and the hills are green, but rides can be paused in bad weather. Keep your plan flexible.
- Keep the lake clean. No plastic overboard, please. Pichola has been looking after this city since 1362.

Quick answers
Which is the best lake for boating in Udaipur?
Lake Pichola, for the palace views. Fateh Sagar is a more relaxed, local alternative with speedboats and paddle boats.

No. It's a hotel open only to guests. Boats circle it, and some Pichola rides stop at Jag Mandir instead.
What time is the sunset boat ride in Udaipur?
It's the late-afternoon slot, and it shifts with the season. Check the timing at the jetty counter on the day and book early in peak months.
