Best Cafés in Udaipur: 7 Local Favourites for Coffee and Lake Views

Udaipur runs on two things: lake breezes and something warm in a cup. Somewhere between the palace tours and the boat rides, you will want a table, a coffee and an hour where nobody is selling you a miniature painting. These seven cafés are where we send our friends, and they are all very different from one another.

We have grouped them by mood rather than pretending one is objectively "the best". A café that is perfect for a sunset date is the wrong call when you need Wi-Fi and silence, and vice versa.

How to use this list

Udaipur's cafés fall roughly into three camps. The lake-view spots in the old city around Lake Pichola sell you the view first and the menu second, and that is a fair trade. The newer cafés in the city's residential side are quieter, with better coffee and fewer tourists. Then there are the ones that are simply comfortable, where locals linger over cake for longer than they planned.

Pick one from each camp and you will have seen three sides of the city without trying very hard.

The seven cafés, by mood

1. The Bake Affair – Island: for something you can't get anywhere else

Most cafés in Udaipur borrow a lake view. This one sits in the middle of it. The island setting makes it the most unusual café in the city, and getting there is half the fun. Once you are seated, the water does the rest: it is calm, a little breezy and noticeably quieter than the old-city lanes you came from.

Order the freshly baked pastries with a coffee and take your time. This is a slow-afternoon place, not a quick caffeine stop. Couples love it, and so does anyone who needs an hour of peace in the middle of a busy itinerary.

2. Qalaa: for the photographers and the design-obsessed

You will recognise Qalaa from Instagram before you walk in. The deep royal-blue interiors are the signature, and every corner looks like someone thought about it for a long time. The good news is that the food and drinks hold their own, so it is more than a backdrop.

Go in the daytime for the best natural light. If you are a content creator, bring patience: you will not be the only one waiting for that particular corner.

3. Millets of Mewar: for eating well without trying hard

Long before millets became a buzzword, this café was cooking with local grains. The menu leans organic and wholesome, with millet-based thalis, herbal drinks and desserts that do not leave you in a sugar coma. The earthy interiors and friendly staff make it a favourite with families and long-stay travellers.

If you have had three days of rich Rajasthani food and your stomach is asking for mercy, this is the answer. Vegans usually find plenty to eat here too.

4. Aosa: for serious coffee and a quiet table

Aosa is Udaipur's answer to the specialty coffee wave. Minimal interiors, a calm room and a menu built around the brew itself: pour-overs and single-origin coffees are the reason to come. It is the kind of place where remote workers settle in with a laptop and nobody minds.

No palace view here. That is rather the point.

Lakeside coffee is practically a sightseeing activity in Udaipur. Time it for late afternoon.

5. Ambrai: for the classic City Palace view

Ask anyone who has been to Udaipur twice where they ate with the best view, and Ambrai comes up. It sits right on the bank of Lake Pichola, looking across the water at the City Palace, with Jag Mandir in the frame too. The open-air setting and a menu that runs from Rajasthani dishes to continental plates make a simple meal feel like a film scene.

Come around sunset, when the palace turns gold and then slowly lights up. Arrive early if you want a table by the water.

6. Bakers Blend: for dessert and a proper sit-down

Not every great café needs a rooftop. Bakers Blend wins people over with warmth, consistent comfort food and a dessert counter that is hard to walk past. It is popular with locals who want a calm hour away from the tourist trail.

Try the baked goods and the cold coffee. It is a good reset between sightseeing stops, especially on a hot afternoon.

7. Upre by 1559 AD: for the big night out

When the occasion calls for candles, Upre is the rooftop people book. Perched above Lake Pichola with uninterrupted views of the lake and the City Palace, it is one of the most photographed dining spots in the city. The menu is refined and the setting is the main event.

Reserve ahead between October and March, when the city is at its busiest and the best tables go early.

Local tip: Lake-view tables are busiest in the hour before sunset. Reach about 45 minutes before golden hour, order something, and the light show is free. Menus, timings and booking rules change often, so check with the café before you go.

A lazy café-hop day

Start with a specialty brew at Aosa while the city wakes up. Spend the late morning at the City Palace or another sight, then cool off with dessert at Bakers Blend or a light millet lunch. Save the lake for the evening: Ambrai or Upre for sunset, depending on how fancy you are feeling.

Cafés are only one flavour of the city, though. Balance all that coffee with a kachori breakfast from our must-eat local food guide, or a chaat crawl from the street food trail. If you would rather someone stitched the whole day together for you, our trip planner can help.

Quick answers

Which café in Udaipur has the best lake view?

For the classic City Palace view across Lake Pichola, Ambrai and Upre by 1559 AD are the usual picks. For a café surrounded by water, try The Bake Affair – Island.

Are there quiet cafés in Udaipur for working on a laptop?

Yes. Aosa is calm and coffee-focused, and Bakers Blend has a relaxed indoor vibe. Away from the old city, things are generally quieter.

Do I need to book a lakeside café in Udaipur?

For sunset tables between October and March, booking or arriving early is wise, especially at the rooftop spots. Check directly with the café before you go.
