Shilpgram Utsav: Udaipur's December crafts festival

Picture a village fair where the potter, the puppet maker, the embroiderer and the drummer all turned up at once, and then invited artisans from half of India to join them. That's Shilpgram Utsav. For ten days every December, the crafts village just outside Udaipur turns into the city's favourite place to shop, snack and stay out late.

What Shilpgram Utsav is

Shilpgram is a rural arts and crafts village a few kilometres west of the city, run by the West Zone Cultural Centre. Through the year it's a calm place with traditional huts from western Indian states and the odd craft demonstration. In December it gets loud, colourful and packed, because that's when the Utsav arrives.

The festival runs for ten days, typically starting around 21 December and finishing around the 30th. The organisers confirm dates each year, so check the current programme before you plan your evening.

What to see

Artisans at work

Rows of stalls are run by the craftspeople themselves. You'll see weavers at looms, painters working on fine brushwork and potters at the wheel. Stop, watch, ask questions. Most artisans love talking about their work, and it's the best way to understand what you're buying.

Folk performances

The open-air stage hosts folk music and dance groups through the evening. Expect drums, ghoomar-style twirling skirts, and performers from other states too. Wandering musicians play between the stalls, so you'll hear the ravanhatta or a flute at random corners.

The huts and the village itself

Walk around the traditional huts and courtyards. They're a quiet escape when the main lanes get crowded, and great for photos in the late-afternoon light.

What to buy

This is the fun part. Look out for:

  • Bandhani and leheriya tie-dye dupattas and turbans
  • Block-printed bedcovers, cushion covers and stoles
  • Molela terracotta plaques from the village near Nathdwara
  • Kathputli puppets and painted wooden toys for the kids at home
  • Mojaris, silver jewellery and small miniature paintings

Bargain politely; it's expected, but these are makers, not middlemen, so don't squeeze too hard. Many stalls take UPI, but carry some cash for small buys. For more on local crafts and where to find them the rest of the year, see our art and crafts section.

Local tip: do a full lap before you buy anything. The same craft often appears at several stalls, and the best piece is rarely at the first one you see.

What to eat

The food stalls are half the reason locals go. You'll usually find Rajasthani staples like dal baati churma, kachori and mirchi bada, plus snacks from other states and plenty of chai in kulhads. December evenings get chilly, so a hot cup while the music plays is pretty much mandatory.

Getting there

Shilpgram sits a few kilometres west of the city, beyond Fateh Sagar. An auto or cab from the old city is the easiest option. The catch is traffic: during the Utsav, the approach road and parking can jam badly in the evening, especially on weekends and towards the end of December.

  • Arrange your return ride in advance, because finding an auto at closing time is hard.
  • If you're driving, arrive before sunset when parking is easier.
  • There's usually an entry ticket. Check the current fee and timings before you go.

If you'd rather not deal with any of this, our travel assistance team can connect you with a trusted local driver.

A simple plan for the day

Arrive mid-afternoon on a weekday, shop while the light is good, eat as the stalls light up, and stay for an hour of performances. Wear comfortable shoes (the grounds are dusty), carry a light jacket and a cloth bag for your shopping. If you're travelling with kids, keep a meeting point in mind near the main stage, because the crowd thickens quickly after dark and little ones love wandering off towards the puppet stalls.

Buying something big, like a rug or a stack of bedcovers? Ask the stall whether they can pack it for travel, and take a photo of the stall and the artisan's details in case you want to order again later. Plenty of locals go back to the same artisans at the Utsav year after year. Pair it with the other winter highlights in our Udaipur festival calendar.
